Shaq: GOAT Debate Over After LeBron Broke Kareem’s Record

August 6, 2025

We all know our man Shaq is big on lists, rankings and other stat-related grades. Now he says the Greatest of All Time debate is over. What do you think?

When LeBron James broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record in 2023, it wasn’t just a historic highlight — it was a turning point. For many, including Shaquille O’Neal, that moment ended a conversation that had raged for decades: Who is the greatest basketball player of all time?

“I don’t like having this conversation, because I actually know all these guys,” Shaq said at the time. “But I know LeBron, and I think this was always his plan. If he passes Kareem, we all have to shut the hell up. He’s got four rings, he passed up Kobe, he passed up Mike… now he’s passed Kareem. What else are we talking about?”

To Shaq, it wasn’t just about the total points. It was what those points represented. Kareem held the record for nearly 40 years. Through eras, rule changes, and waves of new talent, nobody could touch it — until LeBron. The fact that James stayed dominant for that long, through 20 seasons of change and challenge, said as much about his greatness as the number itself.

The Crown Comes with Weight

Even before setting the record, the GOAT debate followed LeBron everywhere. His four MVPs and four championships were seen through the lens of comparison. Every Finals win was ammo for fans. Every loss was fuel for critics. But when the record finally fell in Los Angeles, all that noise seemed to pause. The game stopped. The cameras flashed. And the moment spoke louder than anything else.

“I’m gonna take myself against anybody who’s ever played this game,” LeBron said that night. He didn’t have to yell it. The stats said enough.

What makes LeBron’s case so strong isn’t just the scoring record. It’s the consistency. Year after year, team after team, the man showed up. He wasn’t just great for a few seasons — he’s been great for two decades.

Not Everyone Will Agree — And That’s Okay

Basketball is a game of moments, memories, and milestones. Some fans will still favor Michael Jordan’s perfect 6-0 Finals record. Others will ride with Kobe’s killer mentality or Bill Russell’s unmatched 11 rings. That’s the beauty of the sport — the GOAT question will always be up for debate.

But as Shaq sees it, LeBron’s case now has something no one else can match: the all-time scoring crown. And that might be the final word.

“It’s Not About Who You Like”

Shaq made it clear that his opinion isn’t about personal bias — it’s about results. Kareem’s scoring record was sacred. It seemed untouchable. Once LeBron passed it, Shaq felt the debate was no longer necessary.

There will always be different favorites. But at some point, the numbers speak louder than anything else. Longevity. Impact. Titles. And now, the greatest scoring total in NBA history.

LeBron has always said he wants to be remembered as one of the best to ever do it. With this milestone, he may have cemented his place at the very top.
