Shaquille O’Neal has taken on plenty of battles in his life—on the court, in business, and even behind the DJ booth. But now, at 53 years old, the Big Diesel is stepping into a new kind of ring: celebrity boxing.
O’Neal recently accepted a challenge from Charles “Charlie Mack” Alston, a longtime figure in the hip hop community and former bodyguard for actor Will Smith. The two men, both well into their 50s, are set to settle a beef that dates back years.
The Origins of the Shaq–Charlie Mack Feud
According to Mack, the story goes back to an autograph signing in Dallas years ago. Mack recalls that Shaq tried to cut to the front of the line, only to be checked by Mack in a way no one forgets.
“I chopped him in his neck so he could get back,” Mack explained in a recent Instagram video, seated alongside Damon Feldman, CEO of Official Celebrity Boxing. That “chop” became the root of the playful rivalry that is now spilling over into an actual fight.
Shaq Accepts the Challenge
When Mack posted his challenge online, Shaq didn’t hesitate to fire back. The Hall of Famer, who spent his 19-year NBA career weighing in around 325 pounds, made it clear that he wasn’t running from anybody.
“Hey Celebrity Boxing and Charlie Mack, I accept,” Shaq said in his Instagram response. “You name the time and place, I’ll be there. Diesel don’t run from nobody.”
Shaq even joked that Mack’s infamous “neck chop” was the reason for his distinct speaking voice. “You chopped me in my neck, Charlie Mack, that’s why I talk so funny. Payback time.”

Mack Doubles Down
Not surprisingly, Mack was quick to follow up with his own post, celebrating Shaq’s acceptance of the fight.
“So I call Big Fella @shaq out yesterday & he accepted as I knew he would!!!! We’ve been talking about it way too long, now we MUST get it ON!!!!!!!!” he wrote.
Mack’s latest post features a mock fight poster with both men front and center—setting the tone for what promises to be one of the most talked-about events in the celebrity boxing world.
At 6-foot-6 and roughly 290 pounds (according to a Will Smith track from his Fresh Prince days), Mack is no lightweight. But Shaq’s sheer size and power make him one of the most intimidating opponents anyone could square off against, even in his 50s.

Celebrity Boxing’s Growing Spotlight
Official Celebrity Boxing has been building a reputation by putting on attention-grabbing fights featuring retired athletes and pop culture figures. Past cards have included names like Jose Canseco, Lamar Odom, and even Tonya Harding. Adding Shaq to the mix could make this one of the biggest events the promotion has ever seen.
Whether this matchup ends up being all fun and spectacle or turns into a true test of strength, one thing is certain: fans won’t want to miss it. The Diesel stepping into a boxing ring? That’s must-see entertainment.
