If you ever needed another reminder that Shaquille O’Neal has one of the biggest hearts in sports, this story might do the trick.
On Wednesday morning in McDonough, Georgia, Shaq teamed up with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office and the nonprofit Dream On 3 to deliver a surprise that left one determined teenager completely speechless.
The lucky recipient? Brandon Simmons — a former standout athlete at Union Grove High School who has spent the past year fighting through one of life’s toughest challenges.
The 18-year-old survived a devastating car accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down after his vehicle flipped into a ditch. Doctors initially gave Simmons just a 1% chance of survival.
But Brandon clearly didn’t get the memo about giving up.
The Surprise of a Lifetime
When Simmons answered the door Wednesday morning, he was greeted by Shaq, local officials, and a life-changing announcement.
He and his family will be heading to Minneapolis for a VIP weekend with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
We’re talking courtside seats, behind-the-scenes arena access, and meet-and-greets with some of the team’s biggest stars — including rising superstar Anthony Edwards and rookie guard Rob Dillingham.
The trip, scheduled for March 4–6, also includes a special VIP welcome from the City of Minneapolis and premium seats for the Timberwolves’ game against the Toronto Raptors.
Safe to say… this isn’t your average NBA road trip.

A Moment That Hit Shaq Right in the Feels
The most emotional moment came when Simmons stood up during the reveal — using a walker — showing everyone just how far he’s come in his recovery.
Shaq was clearly moved.
“I didn’t know you was walking,” the Hall of Famer told him. “It kind of puts a tear to my eye… but I’ll cry in public. I’m happy for you.”
Coming from a man who spent years bulldozing through defenders, that’s saying something.
Shaq later summed it up perfectly: “Brandon is the definition of toughness. Life threw something at him that most people would never imagine facing, and he keeps fighting with heart.”

A Connection That Goes Back Years
This wasn’t a random meeting either.
Simmons actually played on a Shaq-sponsored youth basketball team called the Georgia Express years ago. So in a way, this surprise reunion felt like a full-circle moment.
After the accident, Simmons spent more than a month in the ICU before moving to the Shepherd Center for spinal cord injury rehabilitation.
Even then, his determination never wavered.
In fact, the moment doctors removed his halo brace, Brandon reportedly asked one question: “When can I get back in the gym and shoot a basketball?”
That’s the kind of mindset Shaq loves to see.
Last May, Simmons also crossed the stage to receive his high school diploma with the Class of 2025 — another milestone in a journey that continues to inspire everyone around him.

The Diesel Delivers Again
For Shaq fans, stories like this are nothing new.
Sure, the Big Diesel is known for his championships, MVPs, and those backboard-rattling dunks. But off the court, he’s built just as big a reputation for generosity and lifting people up.
And this week in Georgia, he did exactly that — turning a young fighter’s incredible comeback into a weekend he’ll never forget.
Minneapolis better be ready.
Brandon Simmons is coming courtside.
