Shaquille O’Neal has spent most of his life being the guy who leaves other people stunned.
But apparently, all it took to shock the Big Diesel was Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair and Macho Man eating hors d’oeuvres together.
Shaq recently recalled the hilarious—and apparently slightly heartbreaking—moment when he discovered that the rivalries he had watched for years in professional wrestling weren’t quite as real as he thought.
O’Neal grew up as a huge wrestling fan during an era when the business worked very hard to protect the illusion. Wrestlers who hated each other inside the ring weren’t supposed to suddenly appear together afterward laughing about dinner plans.
Then Shaq hosted a gathering at his home in Orlando.
“I did a WWE event at my house in Orlando,” Shaq recalled. When he was told some of the wrestlers would be stopping by, he happily welcomed them.
And this wasn’t exactly the undercard showing up.
Hulk Hogan came over. So did Ric Flair and Macho Man Randy Savage.
For a longtime wrestling fan, that’s a pretty impressive guest list.
There was just one problem.
Shaq knew these guys were supposed to be enemies.
So imagine his surprise when instead of trash-talking each other or throwing somebody through the nearest coffee table, they started casually hanging out—and eating Shaq’s food.
“They all started eating my hors d’oeuvres and talking with each other,” Shaq remembered. “Growing up, I always thought they hate each other.”
And just like that, the magic was gone.

Shaq admitted it was actually “a sad day” because despite already being a wealthy professional basketball superstar, part of him still believed wrestling was real.
Frankly, that’s kind of wonderful.
Here’s a 7-foot-1 NBA powerhouse who spent his nights battling some of the toughest athletes on the planet, yet apparently still expected Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair to maintain proper wrestling etiquette while standing next to the spinach dip.
But while Shaq discovered that wrestling storylines are scripted, he would eventually learn something else:
The pain definitely isn’t.
Years later, O’Neal stepped into the wrestling world himself with AEW, teaming with Jade Cargill in a 2021 match against Cody Rhodes and Red Velvet.
During his preparation, trainer QT Marshall reportedly told Shaq that when he took a planned fall outside the ring, there would be padding underneath to soften the landing.
There wasn’t.
During the match, Rhodes sent all 7-foot-1 and 300-plus pounds of Shaq crashing through tables at ringside.

Shaq later discovered that underneath those tables was some very real concrete.
Marshall recalled O’Neal returning backstage with a fairly understandable complaint:
“You lied to me! There was no pad under there!”
Welcome to professional wrestling, Big Fella.
Shaq’s relationship with wrestling has always made perfect sense. Few athletes have ever possessed a personality better suited for the spectacle. He’s enormous, charismatic, funny, naturally entertaining and knows how to work a crowd.
But his stories also capture what makes wrestling so fascinating.
The rivalries might be scripted. Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair might actually be able to enjoy snacks together without starting a fight.
But when a 7-foot-1 former NBA center goes flying through a table?
Yeah.
That part is plenty real.
