Ryan Reaves is not the person you normally describe as the smaller guy in the room. Then Shaquille O’Neal walks in, and suddenly everyone needs to recalibrate.
Shaq dropped by NHL on TNT during Reaves’ Wednesday, November 4 studio appearance, creating a sports crossover with a wonderfully simple punchline: put two big athletes beside each other and let the camera explain the rest.
At 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, Reaves brings plenty of presence. Standing beside the 7-foot-1 basketball legend, however, he found himself looking up.
Considerably up.
There are height differences, and then there are situations where a conversation starts to resemble someone asking a very friendly building for directions.
The encounter had the feel of a playful face-off, with NHL on TNT sharing the clip the following day. No elaborate comedy setup was necessary. Shaq arrived, stood next to Reaves, and supplied the sort of visual that makes people immediately send a clip to somebody else.
You can practically hear the accompanying message: “Wait until they stand together.”
That is one of Shaq’s most reliable entertainment talents. We know he is enormous. We have seen the basketball highlights, the broadcast desks and the photos beside people who suddenly appear to have been photographed from very far away.
Somehow, the next comparison still gets us.

It helps when the other person is an athlete whose size is part of his own reputation. Reaves spent his hockey career as an imposing physical presence. Seeing that familiar frame beside Shaq makes the difference especially funny.
The measuring tape has entered the chat, and it has questions.
For Reaves, the cameo came during his first appearance on the NHL on TNT panel as he moves into sports media following his retirement. That gives the moment a little extra charm: a new broadcasting chapter, with an unexpected visit from one of sports television’s most recognizable personalities.
Some people get a welcome email. Reaves got the Big Fella.
There is something especially enjoyable about athletes stepping outside their usual sporting neighborhood. Basketball and hockey have different rhythms, different equipment and very different definitions of an acceptable pair of shoes.
Put their personalities together in a studio, though, and the entertainment needs very little translation.
Shaq’s appearance also serves as a reminder that his appeal travels well beyond basketball. You do not need to know his career statistics to appreciate the sight of him beside another professional athlete and briefly wondering whether the camera settings changed.
The joke is instantly accessible. Two athletes. One frame. A substantial amount of Shaquille O’Neal.

And thankfully, this is the kind of sports moment that asks very little of us. No rankings to defend. No complicated debate to settle. Just a brief, silly crossover that gives everyone permission to enjoy the personalities behind the professions.
Reaves can bring his hockey experience to the desk. Shaq can bring his unmistakable presence wherever he pleases.
But if the Big Fella becomes a regular visitor, somebody might want to check the studio’s wide-angle lens.
It has officially become essential equipment.
