Shaq-Related Inside the NBA Mayhem (For Christmas!)

December 26, 2025

If there’s one thing fans can always count on from Shaquille O’Neal, it’s that he’ll take a joke further than anyone else in the room — sometimes much further. That was on full display when the Inside the NBA crew returned to ESPN after the holiday break and kicked off their marathon Christmas Day slate of games with absolute mayhem.

The day started innocently enough during halftime of the opening matchup between the New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers. As part of their usual halftime antics, Shaq lined up for a foot race with longtime co-host Kenny Smith — a recurring gag that dates back years on Inside the NBA. Normally, the loser ends up embarrassed. This time, Shaq decided embarrassment wasn’t enough.

Instead of simply racing to the big board, The Big Aristotle went full action-movie mode and literally ran through it.

Yes — through it.

The phrase “I’d run through a wall for this team” is usually motivational. Shaq, however, took it as a personal challenge. The Hall of Fame center barreled forward, smashed through the large studio board, and sent the set into brief chaos as lights flickered and the crew tried to process what just happened.

Longtime fans weren’t shocked — just impressed.

This wasn’t Shaq’s first holiday-season act of physical comedy. A few years back, Kenny Smith famously sent Shaq tumbling into a Christmas tree during another on-air stunt, creating one of the most replayed moments in Inside the NBAhistory. But this latest moment somehow raised the bar even higher.

Thankfully, as host Ernie Johnson calmly explained on air, the chaos was carefully planned. A mattress had been placed behind the board to make sure Shaq landed safely — a smart move considering the crew still had four more games to cover that day.

The moment perfectly captured what has made Inside the NBA legendary for decades: unscripted fun, genuine chemistry, and personalities that feel more like family than coworkers. Shaq, in particular, has become the show’s ultimate wild card — equally capable of delivering thoughtful basketball analysis and WWE-level theatrics in the same segment.

Since joining the show after his NBA retirement, O’Neal has delivered countless unforgettable moments: freezing himself in ice tubs, donning outrageous costumes, dancing mid-segment, and constantly pushing the limits of live television. The Christmas Day wall crash now joins that highlight reel.

Most importantly, the stunt set the tone for the entire day — a celebration of basketball, entertainment, and the joy that comes from not taking things too seriously. With Shaq at the center, even a simple halftime show can turn into must-see TV.

And if history tells us anything, this definitely won’t be the last wall Shaq runs through — literal or otherwise.
