Imagine Shaquille O’Neal walking into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Big Diesel towering over Captain America. Shaq trading jokes with Thor. Maybe squaring off against Iron Man.
Honestly, we’re already wondering why this hasn’t happened.
Unfortunately, according to Shaq himself, there’s one very big reason his Avengers dreams never became reality: everybody already knows what Shaq looks like.
In a recent interview with Variety, the NBA Hall of Famer revealed that Hollywood executives have told him his enormous fame can actually make it difficult for him to play certain characters.
Apparently, if Shaq suddenly appeared on screen as a doctor, police officer, or superhero, audiences wouldn’t see the character.
They’d see Shaq.
“I wanted to be in the ‘Avengers,’” O’Neal explained. “They were like, ‘Shaq, we love you and we’d love to put you in, but if your face pops up on screen people are going to go, ‘Hey, that’s Shaq!’”
And, well… they’re probably right.
It’s hard to imagine anyone watching a Marvel movie and thinking, “Oh look, there’s an unknown 7-foot-1 superhero.”
Nope.
“That’s Shaq!”

O’Neal said he’s heard similar concerns from Hollywood executives when discussing other acting opportunities. He’d love to take on more action roles, but his enormous celebrity can make it difficult for audiences to completely suspend disbelief.
It’s an unusual problem to have, but then again, Shaq has never exactly had an ordinary career.
Long before he was discussing Marvel roles, O’Neal actually got his superhero opportunity. In 1997, a 25-year-old Shaq starred as the title character in Steel, playing a brilliant engineer who creates a powerful armored suit inspired by Superman.
So technically, Shaq has already been a superhero.
He’s just waiting for Marvel to call.
And this isn’t a new dream.
Back in 2018, O’Neal talked about his desire to join the Avengers, even joking that he’d love the opportunity to take on Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man.
Considering Shaq’s size, strength, and natural ability to entertain a crowd, we’re pretty sure he could have made a memorable addition to the MCU.
Maybe Marvel simply hasn’t found the right role yet.
And let’s be honest: there are plenty of possibilities. A cosmic warrior? Absolutely. An intergalactic bouncer? Obviously. A giant alien who communicates primarily through barbecue chicken references? We’re listening.
For now, Shaq has plenty keeping him busy outside Hollywood.

His Dunkman professional dunking league is bringing high-flying basketball entertainment to fans, and his business empire continues to grow. He’s also become one of the most recognizable personalities in sports and entertainment.
Which, ironically, brings us right back to the problem.
Shaq may be too famous to disappear into a character.
But maybe that’s actually his superpower.
When you’re Shaquille O’Neal, you don’t necessarily need a costume to get people’s attention. You walk through the door, and everybody already knows exactly who just arrived.
Still, we’re holding out hope.
Marvel, if you’re reading this, the Big Diesel is available.
And we’re pretty sure he’d look pretty good in a cape.
