Shaq’s Dad Taught Him A Lesson He Never Forgot

May 13, 2026

When people think about Shaquille O’Neal, they usually picture the championships, giant personality, hilarious TV moments, or the endless business deals. But according to Shaq himself, the most important lesson he ever learned had nothing to do with basketball.

It came from his dad—and a bag of burgers.

During a recent appearance at the Milken Institute conference, Shaq opened up about the values his father drilled into him growing up. His father was a strict military man, but behind the tough-love approach was a message Shaq says shaped his entire life.

“My father always told me to honor people,” Shaq explained. “Treat people with kindness. Treat people that are less fortunate.”

Simple advice. But then came the moment that made it unforgettable.

Shaq recalled a day when his father had earned some extra money and decided to celebrate with a trip to White Castle. Father and son each ordered five double cheeseburgers—because apparently future NBA superstars have always had legendary appetites.

But on the drive home, they spotted a homeless veteran holding a sign asking for food. Without hesitation, Shaq’s father grabbed three burgers and handed them over.

Young Shaq was stunned.

He asked his dad why he gave away his food, and the answer stayed with him forever.

“Because this gentleman needed them more,” his father told him.

Then came the line that would stick with Shaq through basketball fame, business success, and life in the spotlight: “If you ever become big time, make sure you always look out for the little man.”

That lesson clearly hit hard, because Shaq has spent decades doing exactly that.

Sure, his basketball career was legendary. Four NBA championships. Three straight Finals MVP awards. Dominance from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Orlando Magic. But Shaq’s impact off the court may be just as impressive.

Over the years, he’s become known for quietly helping families, surprising strangers with random acts of kindness, and investing heavily in youth programs and underserved communities. Through the The Shaquille O’Neal Foundation, Shaq supports kids with scholarships, sports opportunities, holiday events, and community programs.

One of his biggest recent projects is the massive $24 million Shaquille O’Neal Youth Complex in Southern Nevada, designed to create opportunities for young people who need support and guidance. He’s also donated scholarship money to youth organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta.

And somehow, Shaq still finds time to build a business empire that looks like it was created in franchise mode on a video game.

The big man has owned car washes, fitness centers, pretzel shops, restaurants, and even launched his own fast-growing chicken chain, Big Chicken. He also holds a major stake in Authentic Brands Group, the company connected to brands like Reebok, Champion, Sports Illustrated, and Forever 21.

Not bad for a kid who once got upset about losing three cheeseburgers.

But honestly, that’s what makes Shaq so likable. Beneath the fame, DJ sets, commercials, and giant personality is somebody who still remembers what his father taught him years ago: success means a lot more when you use it to help other people.
