Shaq Still Bringing the Heat (To Barkley) on Inside the NBA

May 22, 2026

If anybody thought Shaquille O’Neal was going to tone things down now that Inside the NBA has made the jump to ESPN, well… clearly they haven’t watched enough Shaq over the years.

During Thursday night’s Eastern Conference Finals coverage after the New York Knicks grabbed a 2-0 series lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers, the TNT crew rolled into one of their classic “EJ’s Neat-O Stat of the Night” segments. The feature included a clip of golf superstar Rory McIlroy complimenting Charles Barkley’s golf swing. Naturally, the show followed that up with a hilariously awkward posed photo of Barkley holding a golf club.

And that’s when Shaq decided it was time to remind America that absolutely nothing is safe when he’s sitting behind that desk.

“You know what I like about that picture?” Shaq asked while grinning. “Charles is looking hard when he’s holding his golf club.”

Cue complete silence from the rest of the crew.

Ernie Johnson looked frozen. Kenny Smith looked like he was trying not to burst out laughing on live TV. Barkley looked somewhere between shocked and annoyed — which honestly is where he spends about 60 percent of every episode anyway.

Meanwhile, Shaq? Completely losing it.

The Big Diesel kept laughing at his own joke while everyone else tried to recover from the moment. Then, because apparently one joke wasn’t enough, he doubled down.

“I go hard in the paint!” Shaq shouted while still cracking himself up.

Classic Shaq.

One of the reasons fans have loved Inside the NBA for so many years is because the chemistry between Shaq, Barkley, Kenny, and Ernie feels completely natural. It’s never overly polished or scripted. It feels more like four friends hanging out and roasting each other while basketball just happens to be on in the background.

That dynamic had some fans nervous when the show transitioned into its new ESPN partnership this season. There were whispers online that maybe the crew would have to clean things up a little. Maybe Disney would smooth out the rough edges. Maybe the wild Shaq-and-Charles moments would disappear.

Yeah… about that.

Shaq clearly got the memo and threw it directly into the trash.

The funniest part might be that Barkley and Shaq have both leaned into joking about getting older lately, especially as both NBA legends continue their health and weight-loss journeys. Barkley has openly talked about trying to slim down and improve his golf game, while Shaq has been proudly showing off his own dramatic transformation over the last couple years. The two Hall of Famers have basically become basketball’s version of an old married couple — constantly roasting each other but somehow making it work every single night.

And honestly? Sports TV would be a lot less fun without them.

At the end of the day, Shaq proved something important Thursday night: Inside the NBA hasn’t lost its edge. The jokes are still flying, Barkley is still the easiest target in television history, and Shaq is still fully committed to saying whatever pops into his giant seven-foot-tall brain.

Some things never change… and thankfully, this is one of them.
